Get Ahead therapist's have a lot of experience in electrical stimulation. Lynsay has additional training in functional electrical stimulation and Kerry in surface spinal stimulation and we were already seeing good results with both of the these techniques - but it had limitations.
We came across Neufit and the work they have been doing with using electrical stimulation to improve the sensory-motor connection and re-educated how the brain and muscles interact.
From my work with FND and pain management, I often see a mismatch between the messages the body sends the brain and the interaction with the muscular system. This is also true following neurological injury, where the part of the body affected no longer communicates effectively with the brain and the parts of the brain that control movement can't get their messages through to the muscles - or if they do, the movements are un-coordinated or difficult.
The Neubie allows us to locate areas of altered sensory function where the electrical stimulation from the device is blocked or enhanced. This means we can then target our treatment, not only on muscles that are weak and not responding, but on the areas of the body that have become over-sensitive and potentially blocking recovery.
It is early days for us in learning all that we can do with the device - but so far we have seen some great responses:
Decreased pain and improved freedom of movement
Improved balance and ability to maintain midline
Decreased muscle tone and spasticity
Improved range of movement and muscle strength.
It is an exciting time for the team as we continue to learn all that we can do for our clients!
