Clients are often able to carry out movements and activities in the water that they cannot achieve on dry land.

The pool is kept at 33–36°C. This warmth helps relax muscles, reduce pain and spasticity and allow for ease of movement. Buoyancy supports the body and reduces pressure on the joints, while the hydrostatic pressure of the water increases circulation, decreases swelling and enhances body awareness.

Aquatic physiotherapy can be used in many long-term neurological or orthopaedic conditions to support improved movement, reduce pain, reduce spasticity or muscle tightness, strengthen muscles, and improve balance and walking. It can also help develop water safety and swimming skills, for both adults and children.

Our sessions take place at the Chamwell Centre and at St Rose's, both specialist accessible facilities, led by our physiotherapy team. We're also happy to provide water-based therapy at other public and private pools.

What to expect.

01

Screening Assessment

Before a session we check that hydrotherapy is safe and suitable for you, covering pool access, changing and water safety. It may not be suitable with open wounds or skin infections, uncontrolled epilepsy, certain heart or respiratory conditions, renal failure, or a fear of water.

02

Pool Membership & Booking

Membership of The Chamwell Centre is required before sessions begin, with an annual membership fee from £10. Once your membership is approved, your therapist books and pays for the agreed hydrotherapy slots. Self-led sessions can also be booked directly with The Chamwell, to continue your exercises outside physiotherapy-supported sessions.

03

Your Session

The therapist meets you poolside. Bring swimwear, a towel and soap, and poolside footwear if you wish. Please bring someone to help with changing if needed. The therapist can assist with hoisting in and out of the pool but cannot assist with changing.
